Congratulations to Portadown native Conan Power, who completed a remarkable 13-kilometre solo sea swim from Aughinish to Salthill, Galway, raising over €10,000 for the National Breast Cancer Research Institute (NBCRI).
Conan, a 24-year-old Research and Development Engineer with Boston Scientific, undertook the challenge as part of his company’s charity partnership with NBCRI.
Speaking about his motivation, Conan said: “My family has been affected by breast cancer. My aunt, who was also my godmother, passed away from the disease—and this month marks 20 years since her death. Several of my other aunties are undergoing treatment as well. When I learned that Boston Scientific was partnering with NBCRI, I knew I wanted to get involved in a meaningful way.”
Conan described the swim as one of his toughest endurance challenges to date:
“There were a lot of jellyfish. On the way there, the captain warned me it would be a struggle for a few kilometres. I got out at Clare and for about 5K it was just infested with jellyfish and I got stung quite a lot, but you just had to stay calm and keep going.”
No stranger to endurance sports, Conan has previously completed an Ironman and multiple ultramarathons. “I’ve been swimming from a very young age as part of Portadown Swimming Club. After moving to Galway, being close to the sea inspired me to get back into it. I find sea swimming really beneficial—it keeps you fit, and the cold water is great for clearing your head.”
A huge well done to Conan on this incredible achievement.
All funds raised will go directly to the NBCRI, in loving memory of Conan’s aunt, Colette Dinsmore.
