Our Impact on Research

Participating in the Biobank

A biobank is a collection of clinical samples vital for researchers to investigate how cancer develops, is diagnosed and treated.

We collect and store biological samples, e.g. blood and tissue, from consenting patients and healthy volunteers.

All samples are coded before storage so they are not identifiable.

You will find more information on participant involvement, how we protect your data, and withdrawing from the biobank at these links.

Governance and Compliance

Ethical Approval for the Biobank

Patients and members of the public who volunteer to donate their samples are requested to sign an Informed Consent Form. The Cancer Biobank has received ethical approval from the Galway University Hospitals’ Clinical Research Ethics Committee.

Data Protection

The Cancer Biobank is registered with the Clinical Research Development Office and advised by the Data Protection Office of the University of Galway and HSE West and North West

Personal data relating to your participation in the Cancer Biobank will be processed under the University of Galway/HSE West and North West Cancer MCAN Joint Data Controller Agreement. The Joint Controllers have conducted a Data Protection Impact Assessment (DPIA202300027), a living document which is routinely updated.   ‌‌‌‌
